Why coaching helps

Divorce is a tremendously emotional time. On top of legal issues, the emotions and problems caused by them can make the process even more challenging to get through. Having a trained professional to guide and coach you can make a world of difference.

A divorce coach works with an individual to help them with any grief, stress or emotional strain during the process. They may be present during negotiations and help promote open communication during conversations that are hard to have. A coach can support just one individual or can work as a neutral party with both people. In any case, the divorce coach communicates as part of a team trying to reach a positive outcome to divorce negotiations. The divorce coach will often assist divorcing couples in the preparation of their parenting plan.

A large part of divorce coaching is helping a client look forward and focus on goals while preparing them for a future as a single person again. Divorce is both an end and a beginning. After divorce, issues related to the divorce process may continue to be addressed by a coach if appropriate.

When to get coaching

Coaches can begin helping clients before, during or after divorce. Whenever difficult issues present themselves and support is needed, a divorce coach can help you prepare. The better prepared you are for what’s coming, the better you’ll know how to cope with whatever difficulties you and your spouse must work through to settle. In the midst of divorce a coach can assess how best to help you. Each situation presents its own unique challenges. In high-conflict divorce cases, accusations and arguments can get heated, and with that strong feelings can develop such as guilt, shame, anger and sadness. Acting from those emotions can cause people to act in ways they shouldn’t, which can make a divorce more destructive to individuals and especially families.
